A server is something like a digital locker that’s there for anyone who has the right access to open it up and get what they need, anytime they need it. Same way you may store stuff in a locker for your friends to grab later, a server stores things like data, apps, and files, so that anyone with permission can retrieve them.
Locker = Server:
Like a personal locker with different items stored inside, a server is just the digital form of that. Inside a server, there are files, apps, and more, kept neatly in one place so that you (and others) can access them as needed.
Combination Code = IP Address/URL:
Some lockers, especially one located in public places like offices may have locks and keys. Servers of course have password. Only those with password can open them. Like a locker can be broken into and the content stolen, a server can be hacked, and the contents stolen or compromised. That is why when creating accounts on websites and apps, you should always make sure the password is really strong, that is, impossible to guess. A hacker can only use guessing to try to hack accounts, a strong password means failed attempts for the digital cyber thief.
Locker Users = Clients:
Just like multiple people might have the code to a locker, many users or “clients” (like browsers, apps, or devices) can connect to a server at any time. These clients pull from the server, like you would pull items out of a locker.
Again, clients here means browsers etc. and not a person. Of course it is a person that is expected to use a browser to look up certain websites, so its indirectly a person. But in web programming, client or client side often represent browser or (browser side). Browsers are any website that allows you to write a website address and open it. Safari, Chrome, firefox, edge etc. are all browsers.
Locker Sections = Server Services:
Sometimes lockers are divided into sections – one for books, another for gear. Servers are similar, running different “services.” One part might store website files, another might be handling emails, and another could store databases.
At the end of the day, a server is a digital “locker” serving up exactly what you need. Whether you’re loading a webpage, checking an email, or streaming a video, you’re basically unlocking a piece of the server, grabbing what you need, and moving on.
