The tragic incident, believed to have originated from the generator house and caused by a petrol explosion while the generator was being refueled, occurred on July 8, 2025, at No. 45 Ekpenyong Street, Uyo, where Mr. Udom was reportedly trapped inside a building engulfed by fire.

The deceased, an indigene of Ibiaku Uruan in Uruan Local Government Area, sustained severe burns in the inferno and was rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead the following day.

Eyewitnesses said neighbours made frantic efforts to rescue him and the blaze, but the fire had already spread significantly before help could arrive.

His younger brother, Ndifreke Edet Udom, who reportedly attempted a rescue operation, also sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The situation reportedly took a different turn after some family members allegedly threatened to set Imabong ablaze in retaliation for their brother's death.

The family accused the deceased's wife, Mrs. Imaobong Sampson Udom, who hails from Ikot Edebe in Nsit Atai Local Government Area, of being responsible for the fire outbreak.

She has since been declared wanted by the family and has reportedly remained out of public sight since the incident occurred.

The family has appealed to members of the public with useful information regarding her whereabouts to report to the nearest police station or contact the deceased's relevant security authorities to aid ongoing investigations.

Family members insist that preliminary observations raised concerns that warrant a thorough investigation, urging security agencies to unravel the actual cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding Mr. Udom's death.
