Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has caused quite a stir recently after he gifted N10 million to a young girl from Edo State for her remarkable ability to pronounce some of the longest words in English. The young girl’s achievement quickly went viral, with many people praising her impressive talent.

However, the governor's move has sparked controversy, particularly among Akwa Ibomites who are questioning why few, if any, local achievers have ever received such a generous sum. They point out that the badminton gold medalist was only given N5 million, while 15,000 Akwa Ibom youths are set to receive just N50,000 each, totaling N750 million—a modest amount for a wealthy oil state like Akwa Ibom. Additionally, some of the Arise Ambassadors in the state have received far less than the amount the governor gave to the young girl, who also has a state and a governor of her own. [earn]
But supporters of Governor Umo Eno are quick to stand by his decision. They argue that the governor’s gift wasn’t just about rewarding a girl from Edo; it was about recognizing excellence wherever it’s found. They say this is a sign of the governor’s broader vision of supporting talent, no matter where it comes from, and pushing Akwa Ibom to the forefront as a state that celebrates greatness. For them, it’s about encouraging our young people to aim high and excel in all fields, no matter the region.

Some people may feel left out, thinking no Akwa Ibom achiever has ever gotten such recognition. But looking at it from the governor's angle, it’s clear that he’s trying to inspire the youth, not just within the state, but across the country. After all, a talent like that deserves to be celebrated, and if Akwa Ibom is to truly shine as a hub for excellence, then we should be the first to celebrate achievements, no matter where they come from. There’s no harm in supporting a deserving person and showing that excellence knows no boundaries.
